About
I work with cloth, worn through use and holding the evidence of anonymous female lives no-one thought worth keeping. My work is strange and precarious, once elegant cloth visibly coming apart is met by bright, insistent marks that are almost clinical, clean and hard against decay held in an uneasy tension. Nothing is erased. Each piece is both artwork and evidence of the lives the cloth has known, including my own. My practice is grounded in five decades of embodied textile knowledge, and the work holds difficult experience materially, felt more than understood.
An accumulating series of handmade publications historicises my practice as it happens. Fragments from the studio, image and word are gathered into intimate, poetic objects that carry feeling without explanation, made to be touched. They form another layer through which I explore ideas of authorship and value, evidencing a practice operating on its own terms. In a cultural moment that converts damage into content and accelerates past difficult experience, I stay with what has been marked and worn and what it means to endure.
Biography
Born 1967 in London,
now living in the Midlands.
Hatty spent part of her childhood in Bangladesh and travelled extensively through Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America from the late 1970s through the 1990s, experiences that continue to shape how she looks and what she reaches for. She worked across the creative industries for 40-years - in West End and Broadway theatre production, early digital platforms, arts philanthropy, and the leadership of creative organisations - before turning full time to her practice.
Hatty's work is held in various private collections, including the Private Collection of Maureen Paley, and can be viewed on the White Columns Artists' Registry.
